Transfer registration as seller

About this service

This service allows you to transfer a vehicle, trailer or boat out of your name.

If you have bought a vehicle, trailer or boat, please use the transfer registration as buyer service.

This service can't be used:

To update the current registration:

swap the order of names (change who appears first on the registration)
add or remove a name

If the registration:

is currently in the name of a company with an ACN (Australian Company Number)
needs to be transferred to more than one buyer
has personalised plates or customised plates attached (for vehicles and trailers)

If the buyer:

is a company or business (you can only transfer to an individual online)
doesn't have a Queensland driver licence or customer reference number

Before you start

Please select vehicle, trailer or boat transfer to read important information:

Vehicle transfer

First, do you have a safety certificate?

To transfer a vehicle, you need a current safety certificate or certificate of inspection recorded.

You can only use a safety certificate once – you need a new certificate for each transfer.

Electronic certificates are automatically recorded with us.
If you receive a handwritten certificate, you'll need to go to a customer service centre to have it recorded.

You can't transfer online if:
You are claiming an exemption from providing a safety certificate.

Steps to transfer a vehicle

1. Login

Enter your customer details (driver licence number or customer reference number)
Confirm your identity

2. Select a registration to transfer

Only registrations in your name, that are eligible to be transferred online, will be shown.

3. Enter the buyer's details

Queensland driver licence number or customer reference number
First and last names (exactly as recorded with us)
Email address (if they don't already have one recorded with us)

4. Enter the transfer details

Date of sale
The vehicle value
The odometer reading at the time of sale

5. Confirm the transfer details

Check the details and finish the transfer
Once the transfer is done, we'll send an email to the buyer telling them what to do next.

You can't transfer online if the vehicle is:

registered with a purpose of use other than private or commercial
fitted with a gas fuel system or other gas system
a motorised mobility device (motorised wheelchair/mobility scooter)
a bus or minibus
a special interest vehicle
mobile machinery
conditionally registered
under a Number Plate Confiscation Notice issued by the Queensland Police Service – the vehicle can't be transferred during the confiscation period.
subject to enforcement action by the State Penalties Enforcement Registry (SPER) – the vehicle can't be transferred until the enforcement action ends.

Trailer transfer

Do you need a safety certificate?

To transfer a trailer that has an aggregate trailer mass (ATM) over 750kg, you need a current safety certificate or certificate of inspection (if over 4.5 tonne) recorded.

You can only use a safety certificate once – you need a new certificate for each transfer.

Electronic certificates are automatically recorded with us.
If you receive a handwritten certificate, you'll need to go to a customer service centre to have it recorded.

You can't transfer online if:
You are claiming an exemption from providing a safety certificate.

Boat transfer

Steps to transfer a boat

1. Login

Enter your customer details (driver licence number or customer reference number)
Confirm your identity

2. Select a registration to transfer

Only registrations in your name, that are eligible to be transferred online, will be shown.

3. Enter the buyer's details

Queensland driver licence number or customer reference number
First and last names (exactly as recorded with us)
Email address (if they don't already have one recorded with us)

4. Enter the transfer details

Date of sale
Information about where and how the boat is stored

5. Confirm the transfer details

Check the details and finish the transfer
Once the transfer is done, we'll send an email to the buyer telling them what to do next.

You can't transfer online if the boat is:

registered with a purpose of use other than private
15 metres or more in length
subject to enforcement action by the State Penalties Enforcement Registry (SPER) – the boat can't be transferred until the enforcement action ends.
