Check high-powered vehicle status

About this service

You can use this service to check the high-powered status of a vehicle currently registered in Queensland.

In short

High-powered vehicle restrictions apply to some provisional (P1 or P2) and probationary licence holders.

You can use this service to check whether a vehicle is considered high-powered.

Note: If you are under the age of 25 and hold a P1 or P2 licence, it is a good idea to check before you purchase a vehicle whether it is high-powered.

What you should know

High-powered vehicle restrictions apply to provisional licence holders (P1 and P2) under 25.

These restrictions also apply to all P1 or P2 restricted or probationary licence holders who were under 25 when their provisional licence was disqualified.

The high-powered status of a vehicle is determined based on:

  • when it was manufactured
  • the power or capacity of its engine
  • whether its engine has been modified.

In very rare situations, you may be able to get an exemption to drive a high-powered vehicle if you can demonstrate that you are eligible.

Note: The purchase of a high-powered vehicle is not in itself a reason to grant an exemption.

Who can use this service

Correct.

You can use this service if:

  • you know the registration (number plate) or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the vehicle
  • the vehicle's registration is current
  • the vehicle is registered in Queensland.

You can't use this service if:

  • you don't know the registration (number plate) or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the vehicle
  • the vehicle's Queensland registration is expired or cancelled.

Instead, find out how to manually calculate the power-to-weight ratio for vehicles manufactured after 2010 or when a vehicle manufactured before 2010 is classified as a high-powered vehicle.
